Artist and author Keith McHenry helped start Food Not Bombs in Massachusetts in 1980 and the second chapter in California in 1988. Keith lived in National Parks as a child when his father worked as a park naturalist. He has recovered, cooked and shared food with the hungry with Food Not Bombs for over 30 years. He was arrested “for making a political statement” in San Francisco, spent over 500 nights in jail and faced 25 years to life in prison. He spent 19 days in jail in 2011 for sharing vegan meals in violation of Orlando, Florida’s large group feeding law. He co-wrote “Food Not Bombs How to feed the hungry and build community” as well as wrote and illustrated “Hungry for Peace – How you can help end poverty and war with Food Not Bombs” He has traveled all over the world speaking at colleges, books stores and community centers while sharing free vegan meals with many of the over 1,000 Food Not Bombs groups active around the world. When he isn’t on the road Keith lives at the Food Not Bombs Free Skool in Taos, New Mexico tending it’s garden, sharing meals each Saturday and coordinating logistics for Food Not Bombs. He also draws, paints, and writes about environmental, social change, and liberation issues.
